Citizens for Civil Rights (CCR)
In 1993 city councils in both Lafayette and West Lafayette passed human relations ordinances that included protections from sexual-orientation-based discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodation. CCR was founded in 1996 in response to a conservative political backlash which threatened to repeal Lafayette’s ordinance. The repeal effort failed almost entirely due to CCR’s successful efforts.
CCR meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 7:00pm at the Pride Lafayette Community Center located at 640 Main St in downtown Lafayette. Anyone interested in local civil rights is encouraged to attend.
Indiana Equality
The mission of Indiana Equality (IE), a 501(c)3 organization, is to end discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in Indiana. IE, the educational counterpart to Indiana Equality Action, seeks nondiscrimination by facilitating and coordinating the efforts of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) and allied communities. IE focuses its efforts through a number of activities and programs including issues engagement, community mobilization, a speakers’ bureau, and research. Tax deductible contributions to Indiana Equality help fund activities that result in progress in equality for all Hoosiers.
Human Rights Campaign (HRC)
The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all. HRC seeks to improve the lives of LGBT Americans by advocating for equal rights and benefits in the workplace, ensuring families are treated equally under the law and increasing public support among all Americans through innovative advocacy, education and outreach programs. HRC works to secure equal rights for LGBT individuals and families at the federal and state levels by lobbying elected officials, mobilizing grassroots supporters, educating Americans, investing strategically to elect fair-minded officials and partnering with other LGBT organizations.
