Bryan Bell, president of Pride Lafayette and one of the organizers for Saturday's OUToberFest, had hoped to see between 500 and 1,000 people attend the event by day's end. That target was met -- and surpassed -- in about three hours, according to hand tally counters used to track attendance at Lafayette's first festival for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community... National Coming Out Day encourages civil awareness
Journal and Courier, Lafayette, Indiana
Oct 10, 2008

National Coming Out Day (NCOD), a now internationally-celebrated event, occurs on Oct. 11 each year. NCOD serves as a civil awareness day, during which the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community encourages open discussion about GLBT issues, and also encourages GLBT people to "come out of the closet." Though the exact origins of the phrase are debated, its meaning is understood to refer to the act of openly admitting a GLBT identity for oneself. .. [read full article online]

Letters to the Editor: Getting to know your community
Journal and Courier, Lafayette, Indiana
Oct 05, 2008

I am a straight, married man and was raised Christian. I will be attending OUToberFest with my wife and family. It's not something I saw myself doing a few years ago. I'm sure to ask myself once or twice why I'm there, what this whole thing is for and why I should care. That may seem offensive to some, but it's the truth. And I'm sure there will be a few others who will end up thinking the same things. So why attend?... [read full article online]

Letters to the Editor: OUToberFest isn't place for questions
Journal and Courier, Lafayette, Indiana
Sep 28, 2008

I was pleased that the author of the article "OUToberFest offers opportunity for open dialogue on homosexuality" spoke out in support of the OUToberFest (Journal & Courier, Sept. 16). However, I don't agree with his suggestions for what should be included in OUToberFest. ... [read full article online]

Letters to the Editor: Why do others judge gay community?
Journal and Courier, Lafayette, Indiana
Sep 28, 2008

As Americans, we have the freedom to be who we are. If the gay and lesbian community wishes to celebrate, they should be allowed to do that. If this festival is so disturbing, avoid Main Street for the day. It is that simple. ... [read full article online]

Letters to the Editor: Sexual orientation is only one aspect
Journal and Courier, Lafayette, Indiana
Sep 24, 2008

In the face of the upcoming OUToberFest event, I would like to expose the notion that sexual orientation (e.g., whether one is gay or not) cannot be used to define an individual's identity entirely, which is usually multi-layered with personal, professional, cultural, political and social background, to name a few. ... 'It's ... about time'for OUToberFest: This is in response to a recent letter to the editor stating that OUToberFEST is not for Lafayette. This woman wrote, "I am amazed that a 'festival' such as OUToberFest is found necessary in a nice town like Lafayette," and "there are some of us still out here with morals, and apparently the people on the Lafayette Board of Works need to be replaced." ... Letter writers taught important lesson: I would like to thank a few recent letter writers for publicly displaying their contempt for the upcoming OUToberFest in Lafayette. GLBT community makes city what it is: "I see gay people." They're everywhere.
